Flying to the World Cup in Qatar? Please tell us about it.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is heading to the Middle East for the first time. Qatar is the smallest country in history to host the tournament, scheduled from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18.

As Qatar prepares for an influx of 1.8 million visitors from around the globe, the event is expected to significantly strain the local logistical environment.

All modes of transportation will be affected. Qatar authorities have implemented slot restrictions to manage the number of aircraft flying into the country.

The official State of Qatar World Cup slot application process and conditions can be seen here on their website.

The requirement for a local maintenance services agreement will limit the ability for customers with aircraft types not supported by  local maintenance providers to gain slots for the World Cup.

Since becoming aware of this requirement, Bombardier has been working diligently with the local maintenance provider in Qatar. For Bombardier aircraft types that the local maintenance provider does not support, we are hoping to position certified Bombardier engineers in-country, pending local approval.

Dialogue continues, but we have not yet reached an agreement. Customers must be aware that the only other way to comply with the requirements is to have a flight engineer accompany their aircraft.

Bombardier is currently assessing its ability to provide such support via its Dubai Line Station. To do so, we must determine how many customers are planning to fly into the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
