Crew Control Backup application: New version released

By: Sebastien Desmitt - Technical Services When Apple released iOS version 16.4, operators reported that the Crew Control Backup Cabin Control application version 1.2 was no longer connecting to Collins Aerospace Cabin Electronics System (CES-5000).
To rectify the situation, Collins has released a new Crew Control Backup Cabin Control application, version 1.3.1, that has been tested to be fully functional with Apple products running under iOS 16.4 and subsequent.
Bombardier recommends that operators and maintenance personnel download and install the latest Crew Control Backup Cabin Control application (app.) version 1.3.1 from the Apple Store.
This optional feature, also named CES EFB Galley Backup Application for iPad, is compatible with version 7.X of Collins Aerospace CES-5000 and more recent versions.
As described in the Collins Service Information Letter (SIL) CES-5000-17-1, this new feature requires CES software changes to enable iPad connectivity. The Crew Control Backup application allows the flight crew to control the various features of the CES-5000 without having to use the cockpit electronic flight bags (EFB) or the galley touch screen equipment.
Note: The Airshow button is not available in the Crew Control Backup application. To display Airshow on the iPad, the Airshow Mobile application, available on the Apple Store, must be used.
Additionally, for aircraft equipped with the optional camera system, the live video camera feed is not available. However, aircrew can still push camera video sources to the cabin bulkhead monitor using the camera button.
As disclosed in January 2024, in the Production Discontinuance Bulletin Doc No. 523-0836180, Collins Aerospace no longer provides support to CES-5000 core software. However, they continue to support the CES-5000 software configuration change (refer to listing in the document).

With this option, operators of aircraft featuring Global Vision Flight Deck and equipped with electronic flight bag (EFB) class 2 from L3 can incorporate the optional service bulletin (SB) or 700-25-6023. This SB offers the option of removing existing EFB hardware by installing a tablet holder with smart USB charger capability.
