Galley appliances maintenance

Effectivity: Challenger 600 series aircraft

ATA 25

Bombardier would like to remind its operators that, similar to household appliances, appliances installed on the Challenger 600 series aircraft require periodic maintenance.

Bombardier would like its operators to pay attention to the maintenance schedule covered under the CMM (Component Maintenance Manual) and the user guide of each appliance, even if there is no mention in the SMM (Supplemental Maintenance Manual) or STLMC (Supplemental Time Limit Maintenance Check) of the Completions Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). This will avoid unnecessary removal of appliances following a failure caused by not following the manufacturer’s recommendations (example: not carrying out the decalcification of the coffee brewer, not changing the puncture blades). Any removed appliances caused by deficient maintenance affects the reliability data of the appliances and the manufacturer of these appliances considers this to be Customer Induced Damage (CID). Operators can then be charged in the event where the manufacturer deems the damages to be CID, where warranty may not cover.

As such, for the coffee makers and espresso makers, it is important to descale the unit regularly (minimum every 3 months/1,000 cups of coffee) and check and replace the puncture blades (knifes), as needed. The water hardness degree, mostly expressed as milligrams of calcium per liter (mg/l), will have an effect on the descale frequency and will affect the taste of food and other beverages prepared with hot water. It is also responsible for the scale deposits and for many of the unscheduled removals sent to the repair centers. Hardness levels in common brands of bottled water: (Source: Nutrition information publicly available).

Voss: <5 mg/l

Aquafina: <5 mg/l

Dasani: <5 mg/l

Smartwater 10 mg/l

Fiji: 18 mg/l

Eska 25 mg/l

Naya 48 mg/l

Evian: 80 mg/l

Vittel: 202 mg/l

Appliances need to be operated per the user guide. Bombardier has seen appliances removed because of the improper use, such as no paper filter used with coffee maker or a Nespresso capsule not punctured before use. These appliances were removed and reported as ether CID or No Fault Found.

Coffee Maker used without paper filter (Contaminated)

Normal puncture of capsules.
