Bombardier would like to remind operators that appliances installed on the Challenger 600 series aircraft require periodic maintenance, similar to those found in any household.

Bombardier directs your attention to the maintenance schedule outlined in the Component Maintenance Manual (CMM) and the user guide of each appliance, even if there is no mention of it in the Supplemental Maintenance Manual (SMM) or Supplemental Time Limit Maintenance Check (STLMC) of the Completions Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). This will avoid the unnecessary removal of appliances due to operators not following the manufacturer’s recommendations (example: not decalcifying the coffee brewer or not changing the puncture blades).

Appliances removed due to deficient maintenance affects the reliability data of the appliances. The manufacturer of these appliances considers this to be Customer Induced Damage (CID). In the case of CID, the warranty may not apply, and operators may be charged for repairs.

As such, for coffee makers and espresso makers, it is important to descale the unit regularly (minimum every three months/1,000 cups of coffee) and check and replace the puncture blades (knives), as needed. The water hardness degree, mostly expressed as milligrams of calcium per liter (mg/l), will influence the descale frequency and will affect the taste of food and other beverages prepared with hot water. It is also responsible for the scale deposits and for many of the unscheduled removals sent to the repair centres.

Hardness levels in common brands of bottled water:

  • Voss: <5 mg/l

  • Aquilina: <5 mg/l

  • Dasani: <5 mg/l

  • Smartwater 10 mg/l

  • Fiji: 18 mg/l

  • Eska 25 mg/l

  • Naya 48 mg/l

  • Evian: 80 mg/l

  • Vittel: 202 mg/l

Appliances must be operated per the user guide. Bombardier has seen appliances removed because of improper use, such as no paper filter used with the coffee maker, or a Nespresso capsule not punctured before use. These appliances were removed and reported as either CID or No Fault Found.

Coffee maker used without paper filter (contaminated)

Normal puncture of capsules.
