Maintaining galley appliances ensures continued warranty coverage

Similar to your kitchen appliances at home, galley appliances installed on Challenger 600 series aircraft require periodic maintenance. To prevent the unnecessary removal of appliances, Bombardier reminds operators to follow manufacturers’ recommendations as outlined in the Component Maintenance Manual (CMM) and the user guide of each appliance. These recommendations should be followed even if there is no mention in the Supplemental Maintenance Manual (SMM) or Supplemental Time Limit Maintenance Check (STLMC) of the Completions Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). This will avoid unnecessary damage caused by not following manufacturers’ recommendations, for example, not carrying out the decalcification of the coffee brewer or not changing the puncture blades. 

If regular maintenance is not performed, manufacturers may consider breakdowns to be customer induced damage (CID). Warranties may not apply, and operators could be charged where CID is determined to be the cause of a breakdown.  

For coffee makers and espresso makers, it is important to descale the unit regularly (at minimum every three months or 1,000 cups of coffee) and check and replace the puncture blades (knives), as needed.  

The water hardness degree, commonly expressed as milligrams of calcium per liter (mg/l), will affect the descaling frequency and will affect the taste of food and other beverages prepared with hot water. It is also responsible for scale deposits and for many unscheduled equipment repairs.

Voss: <5 mg/l 

Aquafina: <5 mg/l 

Dasani: <5 mg/l 

Smartwater: 10 mg/l 

Fiji: 18 mg/l 

Eska: 25 mg/l 

Naya: 48 mg/l 

Evian: 80 mg/l 

Vittel: 202 mg/l

Appliances must be operated according to the user guide. Bombardier has seen appliances removed because of improper use, including operating the coffee maker without a paper filter, or a Nespresso capsule not punctured before use. These appliances were removed and reported as either CID or No Fault Found.
