Unveiling the future of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

By: Nicolas Audet

In a world where the aviation industry is taking centre stage in the pursuit of sustainable practices, the spotlight is on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Amidst carbon-conscious travel and pressing resource constraints, the push for innovative, low-carbon solutions is shaping the future of aviation. Bombardier, a trailblazer in the aerospace sector, is at the forefront of this revolution.

The company's commitment to a cleaner, more energy-efficient world is evident in its business aviation sector's ambitious goals: a two per cent annual fuel efficiency improvement by 2020, carbon-neutral growth from 2020, and a groundbreaking 50 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050, based on 2005 data.

A significant milestone in Bombardier's journey towards sustainability is the increased adoption of SAF in the business aviation segment. Collaborating with industry partners, the company spearheaded efforts that led to Van Nuys Airport becoming the first general aviation airport in the United States to offer SAF to operators on a trial basis in early 2019. Bombardier is the first OEM in the world to publish its Environmental, Social and Governance plan (ESG) for all its aircraft platforms.

For aircraft operators, the implications are profound. SAF represents a tangible step toward greener skies, offering a viable alternative to traditional jet fuels. Understanding this shift is crucial for operators navigating the evolving landscape of environmental sustainability in aviation.

To delve deeper into this transformative era, the ESG plan and two key articles provide valuable insights. The ESG plan details clear objectives with regards to its environmental footprint and sustainable aviation:

  • Manufacture and service aircraft with the smallest possible environmental impact

  • Lead sustainable aviation by designing innovative and environmentally responsible products

The first presentation, sourced from the Association Québécoise pour la Promotion de l'Énergie Renouvelable (AQPER), details Bombardier's strategic approaches and innovations in the context of SAF. It serves as a comprehensive guide for aircraft operators seeking a nuanced understanding of the sustainable fuel landscape.

The second article, from the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), explores the new era of sustainable fuel in aviation. It not only complements Bombardier's initiatives but also widens the perspective for aircraft operators, connecting the dots between environmental goals and operational implications.

In conclusion, the future of aviation is taking flight with Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Aircraft operators are not just bystanders; they are pivotal players in this green evolution. By embracing the insights provided by Bombardier and delving into the resources provided, operators can position themselves at the forefront of a sustainable aviation landscape, where every flight is a step closer to a cleaner, more efficient tomorrow.
