Safety Standdown Safety Talk #15: Conflict Zones and Security Risks

Bombardier’s latest Safety Standdown Safety Talk took place April 21, 2022, and the topic was certainly top of mind: operational realities considering military conflicts around the world.

In this informative presentation, “Conflict Zones and Security Risks,” John Cauthen, Security Director, Aviation & Maritime at Phoenix, Arizona based MedAire, explored the security implications to aviation operations in several locations including the current situation in Ukraine, as well as other global hotspots such as the Middle East, Central Africa, and increasing tensions in Northeast Asia.

Cauthen discussed pressing topics, including:

  • The Russo-Ukraine War may be a prolonged conflict. What implications does it have in civil aviation regionally and globally?

  • Anti-aircraft weapons proliferation and irregular fighters may pose a risk to aviation operations and overflight of certain geographic locations here. How can we deal with these realities?

  • What sort of weapons systems should operators be aware of in some of these conflict zones as it relates to overflight and/or adjacent flight operations?
