QAR-100 Quick Access Recorder – USB Connector Damage
Effectivity: Global 5000 GVFD, Global 5500, Global 6000, Global 6500 and Global 7500 aircraft
ATA 31-33
We would like to inform operators and technicians of a condition observed in-service and associated best practices to use the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Mini-B port on Quick Access Recorder (QAR) installed on Global Platforms. The QAR-100 (part number 822-2780-020) is a multipurpose, high-capacity recorder installed by optional Service Bulletin (SB) allowing rapid access to recorded aircraft operational information via a built-in USB port interface (see Figure 1).
The standard USB connector (J2) could be damaged if an excessive force is applied or not clocked properly (wrong side/sideway) when the USB interface cable is connected. We have seen approximately 33% of unscheduled removals associated with damaged J2 connector.
The investigation conducted by Collins Aerospace reveals that the lands/pads of five-pin “Mini-B” USB connector on the Printed Wiring Assembly (PWA) has lifted likely due to excessive force application, resulting in the replacement of the PWA during repair (see Figure 2).
To avoid the USB connector damage, please observe the following good practices:
Verify the USB port on the QAR-100 and interface cable connectors for any damage before connecting
Ensure proper connector orientation/keyway
Do not plug in or pull out the USB connector using up, down, left, right, or forward force.
Apply gentle insertion force during the connection process, if you feel excessive restriction, stop
Do not pull out the USB connector by holding the USB interface cable.
Following the above practices will safeguard preventable QAR replacement and associated maintenance action. Note that Collins Aerospace is currently investigating on possible ways to make the connector installation more robust, however proper usage will always be the principal benefit for long term QAR reliability.
