Novega GREEN90 Underwater Locating Beacon (ULB)

Effectivity: All Learjet aircraft

ATA: 31

By: Michael Naish

Bombardier has approved the use of the Novega GREEN90 ULB (P/N 22960-00) for use on certain L3Harris and all Universal Avionics flight data recorders (FDRs) and cockpit voice recorders (CVRs) for Learjet aircraft.

The GREEN90 ULB is powered by alkaline batteries and is an alternative to lithium battery powered ULBs. The GREEN90 ULB meets the requirements of ETSO-C121b which are the same performance standards as the lithium battery ULBs. The immediate advantage of the GREEN90 ULB is that it is considered non-hazardous and there are no transport restrictions of this ULB. The alkaline batteries are non-combustible, have no explosion hazard and have no thermal runaway conditions. The GREEN90 ULB also has a 10-year shelf life.

As mentioned above, L3Harris has no technical objection (NTO) to the installation of the GREEN90 ULB on all FA2100 FDRs and CVRs installed in the Learjet fleet. Universal Avionics has provided an NTO that extends to all FDRs and CVRs installed in Learjet aircraft.

Learjet models with CVRs and FDRs in the standard illustrated parts catalog (IPC) will see the addition of the GREEN90 ULB as an option upon the next revision. Aircraft with Universal Avionics or L3Harris FA2100 recorders installed as optional equipment shown in their customized completions manual (CCM) or supplemental maintenance manual (SMM) will not have these manuals updated. However, all aircraft with these recorders are eligible to install the GREEN90 ULB.

When repair or maintenance is required for your CVR or FDR, it is advised to remove the GREEN90 ULB from the recorder before shipment and specify on the work order not to replace the ULB while the recorder is in for repair. The standard ULB for both L3Harris and Universal Avionics are lithium battery units, and these will be installed unless otherwise instructed.
