Protect pitot-static probes to prevent unscheduled removal

Effectivity: Global and Challenger aircraft

ATA: 34-11

By: Ying Tian – Technical Services

Contamination, damage or degradation to pitot-static probes affects Air Data System (ADS) reliability and may contribute to “altitude split” or altimetry issues. In cases of contamination, the affected aircraft may require extensive troubleshooting of the entire ADS system, thus impacting aircraft availability or delaying flight operation.

To maximize aircraft availability and reduce the unscheduled removal of pitot-static probes, Bombardier reminds operators and maintenance crews to use approved ground support equipment (GSE) covers to protect the pitot-static probes while the aircraft is parked or undergoing maintenance.

However, altimetry issues are not always related to pitot-static probes; therefore, if troubleshooting is required, always follow the instructions in the SmartFix Plus tool for the applicable aircraft platform. Use associated fault code/Crew Alert System (CAS) message or Observed Faults, ATA 34-00-00, Navigation guidance.

If the condition is not resolved, please contact Bombardier’s Customer Response Centre (CRC) for further assistance and recommendations. This will prevent unnecessary part replacements that may not correct the condition.
